Larry Smith: Why you will fail to have a great career

Larry Smith asks:

“Are you going to really to go to your sweetie and say, marry me, you are interesting?” What you want is passion and it is beyond interest. You need 20 interests and only one will be your passion. If the word destiny scares you, you will stand for interesting. It should be your highest expression of talent.

You don’t need to have an excuse not to go look for your passion. You have a choice. Some people don’t have a serious passion, and you can’t expect them to sit still until they find it. I agree with the idea that if your primary focus is on surviving you might choose against your passion, but that is not necessarily bad. It is too bad if you choose for surviving and you have the luxury that you don’t have to. In that case you are selling yourself short. But that is not always the case.

There are some of you that will find your passion and you will still fail because you are not going to follow it. You’ve invented a new excuse: “I would pursue a great career but because I won’t sacrifice being a great spouse, a great parent, a great friend. You use human relationships as an excuse.

You are afraid to pursue your passion. You are afraid to look ridiculous. You are afraid that you may fail.

You are afraid and that is why you will have a great career. Unless … if only I had … if you ever have that though ricochet in your head, it will hurt a lot. Unless … unless … unless.”

Larry Smith, Ted

So I read some comments on the Ted page and shook my head for the people who missed the point.

Shut your eyes.

Remember what you really wanted to do (for work) all your life.

What was it?

Are you doing it?

What took you away from what you envisioned you would be doing with your life?

And … What changes will you make at work this week so that you do not accumulate “regrets of the retiring?” or the regrets of the dying?

Live fully … you owe it to yourself!
